The deceased was born in Buck (sic) county, Pa., March 19, 1830. Age, 76 years, 3 months, and 19 days. She was married to George Swiger April 15, 1847. To this union was born twelve children, eight of whom are living. She leaves besides her husband, who was unable to attend the funeral, 22 grand children and five great grand children, besides a host of relatives and many neighbors. The funeral was conducted by Rev. J. B. Fenner Tuesday morning at the Christian church, of which she was a member. Interment at Cedar Point cemetery. Note: While not named in the article, Mrs. George Swiger who married on 15 April 1847 is Ann E. VanHorn. Also, it is Bucks County, PA not Buck. Her husband's obit: The Shelby County Democrat, Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio, Friday, February 14, 1913 Page 1, center column Some Recent Deaths ---------------------------------- Well Known People Who have Passed Away During the Past Week. {Second name} SWIGER George M. Swiger, a well known resident, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Tamer Everett, at No. 724 Pomeroy avenue Thursday morning about 8 o’clock, aged 85 years. He was born in Illinois and resided in Green township, north of here for many years. Since the death of his wife four years ago he had made his home with his daughter. Short funeral services will be held at the house Saturday morning at 10 o’clock and the remains taken to Pasco for interment. _______________________________________________________ Note this obit has many errors. Per a map, Green Twp., Shelby County is in the south east corner of the county and the town of Sidney is north and west of it. George Swiger was not born in Illinois but rather in Muskingum Co., OH. He was not 85 years old but rather 83 given his correct birth date in 1830. This information can be found in his Civil War pension application file in the National Archives, Washington, D.C. George Swiger was a Civil War Soldier in the 134th Ohio Infantry, filed for and received a pension, Certificate No. 440357. In his Declaration for Pension dated 18 February 1907, George states that he was born January 20, 1830 and apparently misunderstood the “That his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follow:” as his reply was “From 1830 to 1837 in Muskingum County Ohio From 1837 to 1905 in Shelby County Ohio, From 1905 to 1907 at Quincy Logan Co., Ohio”. On 2 June 1898, George lists his wife as Anna Elizabeth Vanhorn married 15 April 1847, at Samuel Vanhorn’s, by Nathan Sheriff and that the marriage record is on file at the Probate Court of Shelby Co., OH [Book 3 page 77]. On the same form dated 2 June 1898, George lists three of his children under “Have you any children living?” including Mary Anna Johnson, Tammar J. Evvertt (sic), and Steward Swiger {The Application for Probate of will on file at the Shelby County Courthouse is filled out by Tamer J. Everett and lists seven sons and daughters of George and six grandchildren, so obviously he did not list them all.} The final item of interest in the pension file is note of last payment on 4 Dec 1912, dropped, as the pensioner died 13 February 1913. The file lists his death date as 13 February 1913 matching the obit. George’s birth location and date as listed in the pension also correspond with the United States Federal census records of 1860, 1880, 1900 and 1910. Tamer provided the incorrect information on the death certificate, which also lists George W. (sic) Swiger born Feb 1828 in Illinois. She did not know his parents either as they are listed as “Unknown”. The time of death is listed at 7:30 am. There is no proof as to George’s middle name although the death certificate is hand written so the W. is assumed to be more correct than the typeset “M.” George’s wife Ann Elizabeth (VanHorn) Swiger died 8 July 1906 so it was more than 4 years previous. Interment was in Cedar Point Cemetery in Pasco, so that is correct. It is also correct that George and Tamer are living together in Sidney in 1910 Federal Census.
