The Cross Bar
Hotel

An establishment sometimes filled
to capacity and often with the same guests was the Cross Bar Hotel,
located at the corner of Main and court Streets. Otherwise known
as the Shelby County Jail, it was built in 1878 and affectionately
named by the proud and pleased landlord, Sheriff Alexander
Ramsey. He served Shelby county 1875-1879, making him the first
sheriff to operate the facility. The "hotel" deserves mention
here, if only because sheriff Ramsey thought so much of it that he gave
it a most fitting name.
