CIVIL WAR CASUALTIES OF SHELBY COUNTY, OHIO
From SHELBYANA October 1988 Issue No. 37

The Roll of Honor, a marble plaque located on the second floor of the Monumental Building in downtown Sidney, Ohio, honors the memory of Shelby Couonty men and boys who died in the Civil War.  The Heroes Tablet was installed in 1878, three years after the building was erected.  The name of each soldier was engraved in the marble and highlighted in gold.  The handcarved frame of walnut and mahogany forms an arcade, supported by Scotch granite columns.  Samuel Lane, the architect of the Monumental Building, came from Cleveland to personally supervise the installation of the plaque.

In 1987, Sidney County Genealogy Society member Barbara Adams took on the project of getting information about the 309 men listed on the Fallen Heroes Memorial Tablet.  (See SHELBYANA July 1987, Issue No. 32.)  After exhausting local research sources, Barbara turned to the National Archive records at Washington, D.C. Presented here are those 309 names plus 16 more added during her research.

The information obtained varies from just the unit served with, to names of wives, parents & children with dates of briths, deaths, marriages, etc.  The (*) beside the name indicates a minimum of information was found, ranging from just the unit served with, to the addition of the date of death and sometimes place of death. The only information for S.W. GOINGS was that he had been identified locally as a black Civil War soldier.

A copy of all information found for these men: THE FALLEN HEROES OF SHELBY COUNTY, OHIO, a history of the Civil War soldiers who died during service in that war, is available at the Amos Memorial Public Library, 230 E. North St., Sidney, OH.
