Shelby County in the Civil War
118th Regiment O.V.I.

 
This Regiment was organized at Cincinnati and Camp Mansfield, Ohio on September 1, 1862 for a term of three years.  The 118th Regiment was first sent toward Lexington, Ky with other troops, and at Cynthiana it was detached to guard the railroad.  Their first battle was fought at Mossy creek.  IN the campaign of May 1864, it movd upon Dalton and from there advanced to Resaca.  Here, the regiment participated in a charge upon the enemy.  After a few days, they were engaged in the battle of Dallas.  Some of the battles that the 118th Reg. fought in were; Mossy Creek (TN) Resaca, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Franklin, Nashville, capture of Fort Anderson (was the first regiment to plant its colors on the walls of the fort), Twon Creek, and Mosely Hall (against General Johnston). The regiment was mustered out on June 24th, 1865 at Salisbury, North Carolina.
